Hi, we’re Idana and Tom, founders of Nomad Eyewear. We’re happily disrupting the status quo because we believe that sunglasses shouldn’t cost the earth, let alone damage it. Our affordable recycled sunglasses are collected from oceans and redesigned for fun.
It all started on a family holiday in Cape verde when our youngest, 3 at the time, thought it would be hilarious to snap Tom’s Oakley sunglasses!
On the same trip we witnessed a crazy amount of plastic pollution washing up on the once pristine beaches.
Reluctant to buy another pair of designer sunglasses, and after a few beers, a crazy idea was formed…
…what if we took plastic from the ocean and turned it into sunglasses? And just like that, the idea for Nomad Eyewear was born.
Nearly 2 years later, and after many late nights researching, we found a supplier who aligned with our vision. We cancelled our upcoming wedding and took the savings to manufacture our first sunglasses.
At the beginning of the U.K.s first Covid lockdown we launched Nomad Eyewear from our spare room. It was just the two of us, a website and some super sustainable sunglasses. We had no idea what would happen…
...but we were blown away by the response! We sold out of our Blueberry Muffin sunglasses in less than a week (and to this day they’re still our No.1 best seller)!
We’ve now moved out of our spare room and into a slightly larger space and we employ a few awesome people. But at our core, we’re still a family run business that cares more about sunglasses, our customers, good times and protecting the planet than we do profits and bottom lines. Idana is the one who will probably pack your order. Tom is constantly tweaking this website. And if you drop us an email, it will be one of us who responds!
2023 is set to be our biggest year yet. We’re releasing more styles and loads more colours. We’re working with some amazing charities and brands to create some limited edition sunglasses. And, due to crazy demand, we’re launching in other countries.
From our humble launch with only 15 different sunglasses, to now over 90 pairs of shades (plus snow goggles, blue light glasses, beanies and a host of accessories), we would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers. Without you, none of this would be possible. With your help we’re planting trees by the hundreds, we’re removing tonnes of plastic from the ocean and we’re creating a community of likeminded people who care about the planet and love cool shades!
