Why You Should Wear Sunglasses to Protect Your Eyes

by Tom Allan

As we are approaching the first few days of summer, it has become a great time to take a look at our wardrobes and accessories. For many people, it’s a great time to pull out or purchase new sunglasses. Whether you are going to the beach or simply walking around your city on a beautiful weekend afternoon, your choice of sunglasses sends a message about you, your fashion tastes, and even your income.

That being said, sunglasses play a more important role than a fashionable accessory in the hot summer months. They are some of the most effective ways to protect your eyes from the sun. While some sunglasses may have more protective features than others, the bottom line is that they are a terrific investment for your current and future eye health.

In this post, we want to further describe some of the protective features that you get when wearing sunglasses. Understanding these benefits, you can be more conscious of wearing sunglasses, whether it is extremely sunny or even partly cloudy.

Why Sunglasses Provide Terrific Protection for Your Eyes

Sunglasses are so effective in protecting your eyes because of the way that they are built. Here, we are specifically talking about sunglass lenses. Sunglass lenses protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (“UV”) rays. UV rays are invisible to the human eye and come in three different types: UVA, UVB, and UVC.

While there are some differences between all three, the bottom line is that UV rays can lead to all types of eye problems, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and more. While we can’t see the damage occurring, trust us that it is occurring—even on those days when clouds are blocking the sun.

Sunglass lenses block these UV rays and protect your eyes in several different ways. One of the most powerful ways is through UV coating, which is added to your lenses and acts as a filter between your eyes and the sun. Sunglasses made with polycarbonate lenses already have UV coating, so you’ll want to confirm that your sunglasses have this protection if you are purchasing those with non-polycarbonate lenses.

Along with this, mirror coating and anti-reflective coating can add protection for your eyes. Essentially, both of these tools are applied to your sunglass lenses and reflect light away from your eyes. Because UV rays can be so powerful, this reflecting property goes a long way in protecting your eyes from those serious eye conditions that we discussed.

As you can see, sunglass lenses can be your best defense against long-term UV light damage. But that’s not all they can do. Sunglasses can protect your eyes when you are traveling at high speeds. Specifically, they can help you see the road clearly when you are driving or riding a bicycle. This is because sunglasses have anti-reflective coating and polarized lenses, which can help you reduce glare and see the road more clearly.

Ultimately, when searching for sunglasses, you will want to look at the science. Purchase sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection. Also, don’t forget to purchase sunglasses that sit comfortably close to your eyes. The last thing you want is to continuously adjust your sunglasses throughout your day.
